Cefprozil is a cephalosporin (SEF a low spor in) antibiotic. It works by fighting ear infections, nose infection, skin infections, bronchitis and many other bacterial infections. Please note that this medication is not intended for the treatment of viral infections, cold or the flu.
The dosage for Cefzil depends on the prescription and is based on the level of infection and how the patient reacts to the treatment. Cefzil is taken orally after a meal to avoid an upset stomach. Continue taking the medication until the prescription is finished or as advised by the physician. Avoid stopping the medicine earlier than prescribed even if there are no more symptoms because there is still a possibility that the bacteria will comeback. Do not take this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.
Antibiotic medicines can cause diarrhea, which may be a sign of a new infection. If you have diarrhea that is watery or bloody, stop taking Cefzil and call your doctor. Do not use anti-diarrhea medicine unless your doctor tells you to. Do not share Cefzil with another person, even if they have the same symptoms you have.
You should not use Cefzil if you are allergic to any cephalosporin antibiotic (cefdinir, cefprozil, cefuroxime, cephalexin, and others). You should not use Cefzil if you are allergic to cefprozil or to other cephalosporin antibiotics, such as cefaclor (Raniclor); cefadroxil (Duricef); cefazolin (Ancef); cefdinir (Omnicef); cefditoren (Spectracef); cefpodoxime (Vantin); ceftibuten (Cedax); cefuroxime (Ceftin); cephalexin (Keflex) or cephradine (Velosef).
Possible side effect
Cefzil may cause side effects including diarrhoea, nausea, upset stomach and loss of appetite. These side effects can be minimized by drinking milk or eating food when taking the medication. Less common side effects include dizziness, headache, pyrexia, muscle pain, languor, unusual taste in the mouth and even seizures. If these side effects occur, you must immediately seek medical attention.
Nephrotoxicity has been reported following concomitant administration of aminoglycoside antibiotics and cephalosporin antibiotics. Concomitant administration of probenecid doubled the AUC for cefprozil. Women using birth control pills should discuss with their physician other methods of birth control because Cefzil interferes with the usefulness of birth control pills. Diabetic patients should inform their physician of their condition prior to taking this medication because Cefzil can affect the results of a glucose test.
For a missed dose, take it immediately. However, if it is too near the time for the next dose, skip the missed dose. Never take two doses close together.
Patients experiencing an overdose must be taken to a physician or poison control facility immediately.
Store Cefzil tablets at room temperature away from moisture, heat, and light. Cefzil should be stored in a safe place away from children's reach.
