Azopt 1% (brinzolamide ophthalmic suspension)is a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor used to lower intraocular pressure in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. Inhibition of carbonic anhydrase in the ciliary processes of the eye decreases aqueous humor secretion and thus lowers the intraocular pressure in the anterior chamber, presumably by reducing the rate of formation of bicarbonate ions with subsequent reduction in sodium and fluid transport.
The recommended dose is one drop of Azopt 1% in the affected eye(s) three times daily. Before using the medication, the bottle should be shaken. Do not touch the eye with the tip of the dropper bottle. Remove contact lenses prior to applying the medication and wait at least 15 minutes after application to put contact lenses back on. Tasks that require attention and focus, such as driving and operating machinery, should be performed with great caution.
Patients with severe hepatic dysfunction have to take Azopt with extra caution as its metabolites are excreted in the urine. It should be borne in mind that with the development of serious adverse reactions (Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, hepatonecrosis, agranulocytosis, aplastic anemia) patient should stop taking this drug.
Azopt 1% is contraindicated in patients who are hypersensitive to any component of this product. Pregnant women have to use Azopt carefully and only if there is no risk to harm fetus.
